The NETmundial meeting held in São Paulo, Brazil, in April 2014, brought together more than 1,200 people from governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical community and academia around the world to address key issues in global Internet governance. Its concluding document, the NETmundial Multistakeholder Statement (NMS), recognized that the Internet is a global resource which should be managed in the public interest, reaffirmed the importance of human rights, and provided a set of guiding substantive and procedural Internet Governance Principles. In addition, it charted a “ Roadmap for the Future Evolution of Internet Governance” that included improvements to existing global mechanisms like ICANN and options for the creation of new processes to facilitate the exchange of information, promote multistakeholder collaborations, and generally strengthen the distributed Internet governance ecosystem.

This session will take stock of efforts to follow-up and implement the NMS. The first part of the session will take a broad view of various multistakeholder actions underway, and draws comparisons and contrasts between these and the intergovernmental WSIS+10 review by the UN General Assembly that is scheduled for December 2015. The second part of the discussion will focus more narrowly on the NETmundial Initiative that has been launched to carry forward the Roadmap's agenda by creating an open informational clearinghouse and platform for projects and partnerships. In both cases, speakers will provide basic factual information and highlight some of the possible points of contention and choices before us in order to lay the groundwork for a dynamic and inclusive dialogue among all participants.
