Session description

  • The session will kick off with a brief introduction to the work done by the Dynamic Coalition on Platform Responsibility (i.e., Recommendations on ToS and HR) as a reference in the backdrop of this meeting.
  • Mr. Frank La Rue (Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO) will give a short keynote on the role of intermediaries and ToS in the digital environment.
  • Mr. Brendan Van Alsenoy (PhD Researcher, Centre for IT & IP Law, KU Leuven) will present about the case brought by the Belgian Data Protection Authority against Facebook, following a report on Facebook's ToS (commissioned by the Authority) which he co-authored with other colleagues (see)
  • There will be 2 shorter presentations on challenges in using ToS to measure human rights compliance: 1) Ms. Marilia Maciel (Coordinator at the Center for Technology and society of the Fundação Getulio Vargas) on the "Terms of Service and Human Rights" project; 2) Mr. Allon Bar (Policy and Engagement Manager with the "Ranking Digital Rights" project)
  • Open discussion and brainstorming on the promotion of more human-rights respecting Terms of Service.

Format

The format of this session is divided in two parts: the first 30 mins will consist of a series of planned interventions, while the second part is highly interactive. Participants will engage in an open discussion departing from the context given by the moderators and the 4 "fire starters".

This open discussion will begin at 12:10 and can last up to 13:00, depending on audience participation.
