Co-designing the GIPO platform - 1st interactive workshop on Global Internet Policy Observatory

Description

First interactive workshop on Global Internet Policy Observatory under the title: Co-designing the GIPO platform will take place in Sofia, on 4th June 2015 during EuroDIG 2015: Shaping the internet together conference.

GIPO (the Global Internet Policy Observatory) is the initiative of the European Commission that monitors Internet-related policy, regulatory and technological developments across the [world][1]. The project has started January 1st 2015 and will last 3 years.

GIPO will help users understanding and monitoring Internet-related policy, regulatory and technological developments across the world. It helps making sense of who does what, what positions different stakeholders adopt, and what is being discussed at the key international events. It aims to make this information available to all actors, including countries, NGOs and interest groups, which may have been marginalised in the Internet debates and decisions.

Its distinguishing feature is a strong reliance on the power of technology to manage complex information flows, and in particular semantic technologies. The GIPO online tool will search and scan content sources (new or pre-defined by registered users), and import those content items that comply with some specific rules (filters for each source). The retrieved contents will be routed to semantic enrichment modules that will analyse the content, detect and add several metadata such as people, organisations, locations. Users may search and analyse desired items in detail and share, visualize or export them to other platforms (even other observatories). If you want to have a rough idea, you can look at the [demo] developed in the [feasibility study][2].

GIPO will be a useful tool to retrieve information about Internet Governance, but will not be a forum to discuss Internet Governance issues. There are already many other [places][3] where discussion is taking place, in case you are interested.

As the number of participants is limited, please confirm your participation in the workshop by booking a free ticket here.

Format

In the coming months, GIPO (the Global Internet Policy Observatory) will present a prototype tool that will be monitoring Internet-related policy, regulatory and technological developments across the world. The Observatory tool will share knowledge among all actors, including countries, NGOs and interest groups that may have been marginalised in Internet debates and decisions. Contributions submitted on this platform will be used to make the tool better for users.

The Co-designing the GIPO platform workshop is an invitation for open discussion and collaboration on the technological developments of the platform during three working sessions on specific issues related to the development of the platform. It is a part of Global Internet Policy Observatory series of webinars and workshops aimed at engaging all those interested in Internet Governance in an active discussion on the development of the GIPO platform. Purpose of the workshop: - Introducing and illustrating the objectives of GIPO, - Understanding the needs of community and engage them in active collaboration, - Identifying new solutions together

After presentations from keynote speakers, participants will be invited to contribute to development of the GIPO platform by taking part in one of the three working sessions´ debates. Each of the working session will be dedicated to specific challenges of the development of GIPO platform. The purpose of the working sessions is to identify the opportunities for making sense of complex policy-making issues. The discussion during each session will revolve around following questions: 1. What is the main problem to tackle? 2. What should the service look like? 3. How do we get there? 1. Inspiring examples 2. Existing solutions 4. Who is willing to help?

This workshop is mainly dedicated to the technology experts working on similar tools & technologies and to Internet Governance communities participating at the EURODIG event.
