Session teaser

This session will be a roundtable event to explore the landscape of practical responses to DNS Abuse within the industry. A small panel of speakers will kick off the discussions, with examples of good practices.

Session description

Each and every day, DNS operators handle hundreds of thousands of transactions. The majority are trouble-free and enable governments, private sector and civil society entities to build and develop their online presence. At the same time, there are growing concerns over the abuse of the DNS by bad actors. Registries and registrars are rising to the challenges of maintaining rapid, quality services for their customers, while adopting practical tools and processes to mitigate against the harms of DNS Abuse.

The IGF Dynamic Coalition on Data and Trust has adopted an action plan for 2021 following consultation with its membership. Three key questions will be explored during 2021:

  1. In light of the EU proposals to update the NIS directive, which actors within the DNS ecosystem bear responsibility for data management and data accuracy?
  2. Preliminary discussions around the potential to create shared, transparent processes for mitigating threats to online trust arising from domain names involved in disinformation or criminal activity.
  3. Consultations with registrars to gather industry perspectives on improving user trust during crisis situations (such as during the pandemic).

To deepen the understanding of these questions, the Dynamic Coalition on Data and Trust will organise a roundtable event at EuroDIG to explore the landscape of practical responses to DNS Abuse within the industry. A small panel of speakers will kick off the discussions, with examples of good practices. The remainder of the session will be moderated discussion among all participants on an equal footing, to understand:

  • How effective and fast are existing responses to DNS abuse within the industry?
  • Where are the gaps in the rapid response to DNS abuse?
  • From the perspective of other stakeholders, where is the DNS industry succeeding, and how could it do better to mitigate threats to online trust?

Time: 60 minutes

Format

  • a roundtable format in which max. 2 speakers introduce the topic and the remainder of the time is given over to bottom-up group discussion.
