Session teaser

This workshop looks at the various issues discussed at EuroDIG 2018 through the prism of freedom of expression. Freedom of expression remains a central tenet of every democratic society. Obviously, there are limits to that freedom, and they may vary from country to country. But over all, are the limits getting wider or narrower? And what specifically has been the impact of the huge changes brought about by technical development? Have they been beneficial of detrimental - or both? We also need to ask, who are those setting limits and controlling our ability to express ourselves freely online? Are governments trying to curtail freedom of speech more or less than they used to do? Are internet intermediaries, trying to keep their platforms clean from fake news and hate speech, adopting practices that restrict freedom of expression? Are attempts to copyright reform restricting freedom of expression – or, to the contrary, enabling original content creators to enjoy it?
