Session teaser

This session presented by the Youth Coalition on Internet Governance will explore the recent focus on the environment and sustainability in Internet Governance. Through a mixture of small group discussions, and larger group sharing, we hope to engage attendees in these important issues.

Hear from subject matter experts, youth advocates, and internet users who have all been affected by the intersection of the internet and the environment – and learn what you can do to affect change and make an impact.

Session description

The rise of the Internet of Things in recent years has led to the rise of smart cities as a distinct aspect of internet sustainability and the environment. Smart cities are those which are digitally enabled to focus on the social and physical well being of their citizens – which often involves the use of the Internet as a method to record and act on the actions of citizens. It is a holistic approach, which focuses not only on technology but also on transportation, utilities, and public spaces. A smart city approach is rapidly being adopted across much of Europe through initiatives such as the European Commission’s Smart Cities Marketplace; which aims to improve urban life through integrated technology solutions and a combined approach to solving urban policy issues.

But with the rise of smart cities, we must ask ourselves if the impact of this urban focus is properly taking into consideration the environmental and sustainability impact of the changes involved. This is particularly so when considering young people, who are disproportionately impacted by any urban change – doubly so when technology is involved.

This session will initially present a speaker to discuss how young people are impacted by and can impact the rise of smart cities, before breaking out into small groups to discuss what is going on in each region – with the aim to find some synthesis within our experiences. After all, with smart cities, as with any policy approach or societal change, it is important young people are informed and responsible for the changes taking place within our cities.
