The European Commission adopted in January 2018 new initiatives which seek to improve key and digital competences of European citizens with the aim to promote common values and inclusion and students' awareness of the functioning of the European Union. One of the proposed initiatives is the Digital Education Action Plan which outlines how the EU can help people, educational institutions and education systems better adapt to life and work in an age of rapid digital change. This session seeks to present the EU Digital Education Action Plan and address the three priorities in discussion with a key participant. Afterwards an open discussion with the floor will address digital education in Europe and the implementation opportunities.

Nadia Tjahja is Steering Committee Member of the UN Youth Coalition on Internet Governance, representing WEOG and the contact point for EEG. She has recently co-founded and is CEO of the social enterprise Sunium. Nadia has advocated nearly ten years for youth participation in education and politics and continues to empower and train young people to contribute to international policy-making. Nadia was the former Vice President Communications at Young European Leadership, where she was co-project leader of the Young European Council 2015, awarded with the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 2016 and Agency Coordinator of the 2016 prize-winning online international source verification and fact checking campaign Newsworthy.  She is a graduate from the College of Europe and Vesalius College.

Jutta Croll is project manager and chair woman of the board at Digital Opportunities Foundation. She does research in national, European and international projects concerning the use of digital media, issues of child protection, Internet safety, data security and privacy, digital literacy focussing especially on disadvantaged groups with a lower level of access to the Information Society, accessibility and usability for disabled people, e-government and the impact of digitisation and social media on democracy.

Session description

Format

The moderator will present an overview of the EU Digital Education Action Plan and discuss its components with Key Participant Jutta Croll from Stiftung Digitale Chancen. After this we will open the floor to explore how digital education is addressed in Europe and how implementation can be facilitated.
