Internationalised Domain Names – WS 03 2015
5 June 2015 | 11:30-13:00
Programme overview 2015
People currently are able to write domain names in their own script - learn what are the advantages and current issues
Session description
The workshop will be focused on a domain name-related issue that existed since the creation of the DNS - the Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs). With the introduction of IDNs, ICANN has created the possibility of having top level domains (both ccTLDs and gTLDs) in different scripts (e.g.Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic), compared to the previous limitation of having such top level domains only in the Latin alphabet. IDNs thus contribute to making the Internet more inclusive, as the possibility of accessing and registering domain names in more languages and scripts empower more people to use the Internet. This would be an excellent opportunity for people from non-Latin regions to be able to write domain names in their own language and with their own script - Cyrillic, Armenian, Chinese, Arabic, etc. Members of the panel would include IDN ccTLDs that were recently launched, and also couple of the IDN gTLDs following the new gTLD program of ICANN. They will present the history and best practices of their TLDs, including their plan for the future. There is also a need to raise more awareness and promote a better understanding of the universal acceptance issues, for example the IDN email problems.

Final report
- Other than being names and numbers, IDNs are content.
- IDNs have higher value than being addresses: they are strongly related to preserving national identity, culture and multilingualism.
- We need to keep working all together, especially on finding the technical solutions in order to achieve full acceptance of IDNs by all stake holders.
- IDNs create equal opportunities for all and they can bring us closer to achieving the idea of universal access to internet for all.
- IDNs will empower more people to use internet.
