Session teaser

The General Data Protection Regulation [GDPR] is a European Union body of laws regulating the way your personal data may be gathered, used, stored and transferred. Its impact is global as it endeavors to regulate data pertaining to European citizens and residents wherever their data might be gathered, used or stored: For instance, it you buy something from a vendor in the Brazil or in China or open an account with an US-based game or social media company. The GDPR is of special interest for all actors in the domain name industry as personal data are usually publically visible in the WHOIS service. It also affects all actors, from the registrar or reseller where you buy a domain name to the technical provider, escrow service and ICANN. While GDPR has been in force since 25 May 2016, it will apply in full starting 25 May 2018. The EU has announced to strictly enforce the GDRP.

Session description

GDPR explained and discussed with consumers: After four years of debate, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was ratified by the European Union during April 2016 and has now become law, although member states have a two year period to implement it into national law. This means that companies will be expected to be fully compliant from 25 May 2018. The regulation is intended to establish one single set of data protection rules across Europe. Organisations outside the EU are subject to this regulation when they collect data concerning any EU citizen. GDPR is designed to give individuals better control over their personal data held by organisations, and may lead many to appoint a Data Protection Officer.

Format

The session will start with a brief presentation of GDPR. It will quickly be followed by an interactive exchange with the audience, including a set of key interveners sharing practical insights.
